Our Main Objectives

Our organization is committed to working with special focus on environmental protection, women’s rights, agriculture, and human rights. We aim to promote peace and harmony, improve community and environmental health, and ensure effective waste management. In addition, we focus on developing sustainable livelihood opportunities for vulnerable communities, conserving endangered and threatened animal species, and facilitating access to modern technology for rural areas. These are the primary goals and priorities of our organization.

Our mission

Improving the lives of donkeys every day.

Our Vision

A world where every donkey has a good quality of life.

Who We Are ?

In the Matara District of Sri Lanka, within the Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariat Division, our organization was initiated in 1996 with the participation of the rural community to help prevent wildlife crimes in forest areas under the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Due to the success of these activities, and under the guidance of the Kamburupitiya Divisional Secretariat, our organization was granted legal recognition to carry out community service activities within the Kamburupitiya division.
As a result of the progress achieved during that period, we were registered with the Southern Provincial Development Authority with the support of the Central Environmental Authority under registration number 6/6/17/8/15.
Furthermore, due to the continued achievements in this field, we were also registered under the Southern Provincial Ministry of Social Services with registration number Dep/Sewa 03/Mat/138/98.
Owing to the progress demonstrated in community service at the divisional, district, and provincial levels, in 2010 we obtained national-level registration from the National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations, enabling us to carry out community service activities across Sri Lanka.

Protecting Working Animals and Supporting Rural Communities in Sri Lanka

Our organization is currently implementing numerous projects in the Matara, Ratnapura, Mannar, Trincomalee, and Hambantota districts. Through financial support from international donor agencies, we have provided significant services to the community.
At present, our organization has been carrying out projects with funding support from USAID, the Australian High Commission, the German Embassy, the Mercy Corps organization, the SLCDF, and the UNDP, among others.
With this assistance, we have successfully created sustainable livelihood opportunities for approximately 3,000 vulnerable community families.
Accordingly, we have consistently safeguarded and upheld the trust placed in us by numerous international donor organizations over the years.

Protecting Abandoned Donkeys in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, a highly vulnerable and neglected population of donkeys is struggling to survive without protection or care. In the northern region of the country, particularly in the Mannar District, it is estimated that around 3,000 donkeys are currently living in completely unprotected conditions. At present, there is no organisation or individual responsible for their welfare, and no proper system of registration, monitoring, or protection exists. As a result, these animals face constant danger. They roam freely across roads, sandy lands, and forest areas, exposing them to serious risks such as road accidents, attacks from other animals, and harsh environmental conditions. Tragically, many of these deaths go unnoticed and cannot be prevented under current conditions. The climate in this region further worsens their situation. With rainfall limited to just a few months each year, long periods of extreme drought leave vegetation dry and scarce. This leads to severe food shortages, causing many donkeys to become weak, malnourished, and vulnerable. Without care, compassion, or protection, these animals are forced to live in hardship every day.

Our Appeal

We urgently call upon compassionate individuals who value animal life to support this mission. Protecting and caring for these animals is not something one person or one organisation can do alone—it requires collective effort and global support. We invite you to join us in this vital work. With your help, we can take meaningful steps toward protecting these vulnerable animals and creating a sustainable future for them. Together, we can turn compassion into action.

Why This Matters

Every living being deserves the right to live safely and freely. We believe that these donkeys, too, deserve protection, dignity, and a chance at life. Around the world, donkey populations are already facing the threat of extinction in several countries. We must act now to ensure that the same fate does not occur in Sri Lanka.

Sanctuary Plan

Build the Sanctuary

We have secured 20 acres of land to build a safe and sustainable haven for these vulnerable animals. This sanctuary is designed to provide not just shelter, but a complete environment where rescued donkeys can live in safety, dignity, and peace. Within this space, we will develop dedicated areas to meet the different needs of the animals. This includes secure grazing fields, shaded resting zones, and separate protected sections for pregnant donkeys and injured or disabled donkeys, ensuring they receive the special care and attention they require. A small veterinary hospital will be established on-site to provide essential medical care, treatment, and rehabilitation. Regular health monitoring and emergency care will help reduce preventable deaths and improve the overall well-being of every animal in our care. To ensure long-term sustainability, part of the land will be used for grass cultivation and feed processing, allowing us to produce natural food for the donkeys even during dry seasons. Clean water systems and washing areas will also be developed to maintain proper hygiene and health standards. The sanctuary will also include safe viewing pathways for visitors and supporters. This allows people to connect with the animals, understand their stories, and become part of the mission—without disturbing their peaceful environment. This is more than just land—it is the foundation of a future where abandoned donkeys are protected, cared for, and given a second chance at life. With your support, this vision can become a reality.

Our Plan

  • ✔ Safe shelters and shaded areas
  • ✔ Clean water supply
  • ✔ Feeding and grazing zones
  • ✔ Basic veterinary care

Timeline

  • 0–3 Months: Land preparation

Start Rescue Missions - Be the reason a suffering animal gets a second chance.

In the Mannar District of Sri Lanka, an estimated 3,000 abandoned donkeys are currently living without protection, scattered across harsh and unsafe environments. Without urgent intervention, these animals face a very real risk of injury, suffering, and even extinction. To prevent this, we are developing a plan to identify, safely gather, and relocate these donkeys to a dedicated sanctuary built on secure land. Within this space, we will provide: Nutritious food and clean drinking water Safe shelter and shaded resting areas Veterinary care and regular health monitoring Hygienic and humane living conditions Freedom to roam in a natural and protected environment Special care will be given to pregnant donkeys and young foals, ensuring they are protected and nurtured. Qualified veterinary professionals will carry out routine health checks and treatments to improve their wellbeing. Importantly, our goal is not to confine these animals unnecessarily, but to create a compassionate, open, and natural sanctuary where they can live freely, safely, and with dignity.

Our Future Vision

Within the next 5–6 years, we aim to: Sustain the sanctuary through local and international donor support Introduce adoption programmes where donors can sponsor individual donkeys Develop the sanctuary into a model animal welfare project in Sri Lanka Open the sanctuary to local and international visitors, raising awareness and compassion.
